Macau Pass to issue cards with City Union logo with payments to be settled in RMB

The 2015 City Union Card Development Annual Meeting recently held its opening ceremony in Zhuhai to announce that Macao, Zhuhai, Dali City in Yunnan Province, and 22 other cities had been incepted as new members of the City Union Card. Macao's electronic money card - 'Macau Pass' -, which has joined the Mainland authorities' ongoing initiative to unify all public transportation payments via a universal pass, will offer a new type of card usable nationwide in 71 Mainland cities. In addition, City Union card can be used in Macao for public transport and for debit card spending.

City Union card consumers can use their card in other cities, the integration of which has been promoted by the Chinese Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development in China. The card employs RMB settlement, and will involve currency exchange rates based on the date of exchange automatically converted to UnionPay.

Currently, 72 cities have joined the system. Cards bearing the City Union logo can be issued and used in any of the 72 cities participating in the popular initiative allowing convenient access to public transport, railways, light rail and shopping.

Local smart card service provider Macau Pass S.A.R.L. is slated to issue a new range of cards bearing the 'City Union' logo this month. The new card can be used in Mainland China and has the original function of Macau Pass but with payment settled in RMB. The new cards will require another month to enter circulation, as the relevant transport terminals will only be ready to process the new smart cards in February. All systems include the completion of the upgrading of equipment, including the payment system before the end of 2016.
