MGM has announced that a permanent art collection will be exhibited by MGM COTAI, featuring over 300 items including antique carpets dating from the Qing Dynasty, modern and contemporary Asian paintings, sculptures by renowned artists, freshly commissioned works by local and regional up-and-coming talent, and large-scale installations. All collections will be officially unveiled at the opening ceremony of MGM COTAI.

Imperial carpets exhibited for first time

Spearheading the MGM COTAI Art Collection are 28 Chinese imperial carpets from the 18th and 19th Centuries. Once adorning the Forbidden City in Beijing during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) these rare and precious carpets are both decorative and symbolic, possessing rich historical and cultural significance. In addition, a huge work of calligraphy by highly respected local calligrapher Ung Si Meng will be on display, recounting stories of the Forbidden City alongside the imperial carpets.

Another highlight of the collection is The Chairman's Collection comprising 25 works by celebrated modern and contemporary Asian artists. The star piece of the collection is Chinese abstract artist Hsiao Chin's acrylic-on-canvas Dancing Light 2016. Measuring 9m (W) x 1.6m (H), this is the largest painting ever created in the artist's oeuvre. Another major highlight is Xue Song's large-scale collage Eight Views of Macau. Xue visited Macao to collect information for his creation, which captures the beauty of Macau's natural landscape and its people while documenting the journey of the artist.

MGM COTAI unveils giant golden lion statue

In addition, MGM held an unveiling ceremony for its golden lion statue at MGM COTAI last month. The majestic statue stands in front of the resort-hotel, and at 11 metres high and 38 tons it is the first MGM lion statue to be gilded in 24-karat gold, employing approximately 32,000 sheets of gold foil.

MGM COTAI expects to open in the second half of 2017, with the hotel occupying over four million square feet, and offering approximately 1,400 rooms with diverse offerings ranging from Asia's first dynamic theatre - the Spectacle - to innovative culinary, retail, and family friendly offerings for international visitors and locals alike.

Designed as a column-free long-span diagrid structure as long as a football field, The Spectacle is located in the central part of the hotel and provides over ten different types of seating to accommodate different types of events. The theatre can hold a maximum of 2,000 people.
