Visitor Arrivals in Macao up 6.5% Throughout CNY Golden Week Holiday

According to Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), from 15th to 21st February - Chinese New Year Golden Week in Mainland China - Macao welcomed more than 960 thousand visitors (non-resident employees and students excluded), up by 6.5 per cent over the corresponding period of last year.

During the Spring Festival, the number of visitors from the Greater China markets increased 6.9 per cent year-on-year to a record 910 thousand, accounting for 94.6 per cent of total visitor arrivals, of whom 710 thousand came from Mainland China, 74.3 per cent of total visitor arrivals, and a 12.3 per cent increase. The 170 thousand visitor arrivals from Hong Kong represented a decrease of 9.4 per cent whilst visitation from the Taiwan region fell 6.7 per cent to nearly 19 thousand. Meanwhile, international visitor arrivals dipped 0.3 per cent year-on-year to 52 thousand.

All hotel prices increased

In February, the room supply of all hotels and guesthouses in operation in Macao reached 39079, with industry figures revealing that local hotel establishments (hotels and guesthouses) had registered an average occupancy rate of 94.5 per cent during Golden Week, the same as last year.

According to figures provided by industry operators, 5-star hotels posted an average occupancy rate of 95.9 per cent, up 0.4 percentage points; 4-star hotels registered 94.4 per cent, up 1.6 percentage points; 3-star hotels posted 92.1 per cent, down 4.1 percentage points; 2-star hotels posted 84.9 per cent, up 1.9 percentage points; while guesthouses posted 77.6 per cent, up 1.7 percentage points.

The average room rate of hotel establishments (hotels and guesthouses) in Macao climbed 5.9 per cent to MOP1951.8 during golden week. For 5-star hotels the average room rate increased by 5.1 per cent to MOP2195.2; 4-star hotels went up by 7.6 per cent to MOP1636.8; 3-star hotels went up by 5.4 per cent to MOP1546.1; 2-star hotels went up by 2.7 per cent to MOP1192.4; while guesthouses went up by 13.7 per cent to MOP879.7.

MGTO conducted 73 inspections, received 32 complaints and requests for assistance

MGTO and the Tourism Administration of Guangdong Province smoothly operated the 'Tourism Notification System for Spring Festival Golden Week' from 16th to 22nd February. The Office also collaborated with relevant departments and tourism reception entities to facilitate hospitality work for visitors during the Spring Festival golden week.

During this period, MGTO conducted 73 inspections at various ports of entry and tourist attractions in Macao, and sealed one apartment allegedly operated as illegal accommodation.

During the long Chinese New Year holiday, MGTO received 32 visitor complaints and requests for assistance regarding taxi charges, hotel facilities/service, dining charges, ferry ticketing, tourism enquiries and so forth. MGTO has followed up on these cases or transferred them to the relevant department for settlement.
