The 26th Macau International Fireworks Display Contest, an event organised by Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO), took place on the Macau Tower seafront on 8th, 13th, 20th, 27th September and 1st October. Some 10 international teams participated in the event.

This year's ten teams, in contest programme order, came from Chinese Taiwan, China, Korea, Poland, Croatia, Portugal, Australia, France, Italy and Spain. Of these, Croatia and Poland were two new arrivals in the contest, while companies from Spain and Australia also staged their first ever performances in Macau. The other six teams have competed in Macau in the past, some of whomhave ranked in the top positions.

As per usual practice, the Office requested teams this year to choreograph their fireworks displays to both music and laser light projections in order to maximise the effects of their display theme and enhance the audience's experience of the pyrotechnic extravaganza. Spectators were able to watch the live broadcast of the fireworks shows with background music on TDM – Macau Chinese TV Channel and TDM - Radio Macau's Chinese Channel (FM 100.7) each fireworks evening. Citizens and visitors were thusafforded more choices to enjoy the contest.

In addition, MGTO and Companhia de Telecomunicações de Macau S.A.R.L. (CTM) co-launched the Macau International Fireworks Display Contest SMS Game, an event fixture since 2010. The game has won enthusiastic feedback with over 2,000 text messages received last year. The SMS Game was presented this year to encourage citizens’ participation in the event. Meanwhile, over 66,000 individuals enjoyed the five-day Fireworks Carnival last year. MGTO and the General Union of Neighbours Association of Macau co-hosted the Carnival again to add more fun and colour to the fireworks evenings; the Carnival ran from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and included stage shows and food stalls.

Besides the annual Photo Contest for the Macau International Fireworks Display Contest, the Office organised a social network photo competition for the first time to encourage the whole city to enjoy the event together.
