Budget and Boutique Hotels to Gentrify Inner Harbour District

A renowned architect is overseeing the renovation of Sun Sun Hotel
A new budget hotel is slated to open here in 2017.

The former site of Companhia de Produtos da China - located opposite Kam Pek Man U Chong Sam at the end of Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro - has been vacant for more than 30 years. A low-cost hotel will be built there, with an investment of some 300 million patacas, providing 200 guestrooms expected to be ready in 2017.

According to a dispatch in the Official Gazette, the site, occupying 500 square metres, has been approved for the construction of a seven-storey guesthouse, including basement floor. In addition to a 2-star hotel with floor space occupying over 2,900 square metres, the developer has been granted permission to build a shop space of 798 square metres on the plot.

Macau New Oriental Group, the project developer, said that due to high pedestrian footfall in this area, once the hotel is opened it will link up the Inner Harbour district, possibly serving as a conduit chanelling tourists to the nearby Ponte 16 area.

In addition, another 2-star hotel in Praça de Ponte e Horta will undergo large-scale renovations and be transformed into a boutique hotel. Related designs and plans have been proposed by renowned acclaimed Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, recently awarded the Golden Lion for lifetime achievements at the Venice Biennale. Also, a developer has bought the land rights of the original site of the Yuk Kie Fung Brewery in Patane, and plans to build a 2-star budget hotel with distillery background.
