5.5 million Passengers Used Macau International Airport Last Year

MIA accommodated four new airlines last year

Passenger traffic at Macau International Airport developed rapidly throughout 2014, with single-day aircraft movements and passenger traffic both recording stable growth. MIA accommodated over 5,480,000 passengers and 53,000 aircraft movements in 2014, posting increases of 9 per cent and 7 per cent, respectively, over the previous year. In the first quarter, MIA accommodated over 1.28 million passengers and recorded 12,500 aircraft movements, both up 10 per cent compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

For the second quarter, passenger volume surpassed 1.32 million, while over 12,900 aircraft movements were recorded, representing 7 per cent increase. In response to escalating demand, MIA has embarked upon the accelerated development of both infrastructure and services, with the new Express link facilities located at the north side of the passenger terminal put into use, and new facilities to enhance service quality in the pipeline.

MIA is currently actively encouraging airlines to use their fifth freedom rights to expand the aviation market. The third quarter posted passenger volumes in excess of 1.46 million with daily passenger traffic exceeding 15,000 and aircraft movements topping 13,000, representing 3 per cent increase, respectively, compared to the same period in the previous year.

In the last quarter of 2014 MIA welcomed Tigerair Taiwan flights to Macau, providing, in turn, more flight options to Taipei and Kaohsiung for local travellers. In this quarter, MIA recorded stable growth in both passenger traffic volume and aircraft movements. Passenger volume surpassed 1.4 million, representing a year-on-year increase of 9 per cent, while aircraft movements exceeded 14,045 to record a 10 per cent increase compared to the same period last year. Southeast Asia occupied 38 per cent of the whole passenger throughput. Meanwhile, the three primary markets of Mainland China, China Taiwan and Southeast Asia recorded 14 per cent, 6per cent and 7per cent increase, respectively.

Four new airlines included MIA last year in their route development strategies. Jetstar Pacific Airlines launched its Da Nang and Hanoi service, providing 14 air services per week between Da Nang to Macau and daily services between Hanoi to Macau. Bassaka Air commenced its first international flight service between Macau and Phnom Penh; meanwhile, Asian Air took advantage of traffic rights in Macau to successfully develop a new route to Palau via Macau. Tigerair Taiwan also began operations in December. For its part, Air Macau launched four weekly direct flights to Tianjin while increasing frequencies on several popular routes; Xiamen Airlines also launched its flight from Dalian to Macau via Hangzhou in March 2014.

Macau International Airport says it will continue to leverage strengths, develop regular flights and charter flights, diversifying markets, and recently developed and upgraded its smart phone App to provide diversified information and convenience for passengers through its interactive platform, further promoting the development of the intelligent airport concept.
