‘Soundmazing’ in October with 29th Macau International Music Festival

Tickets are now on sale for the 29th Macau International Music Festival (MIMF), which takes place in a stunning variety of World Heritage venues and concert auditoriums throughout the city from 4th October to 1st November, gathering feted musicians, singers and ensembles from Russia; Sweden; the United States of America; Portugal; the United Kingdom; Italy; Israel; Switzerland; Iceland; Mainland China; Hong Kong; Taiwan, China and Macau. A total of 23 extraordinary performances are on the very full programme as well as more than 60 outreach activities in this grand annual musicfest.

Organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, this edition of the MIMF has adopted the theme of 'Soundmazing', and opens with the Macau Orchestra, which joins hands with the China NCPA Orchestra and Choir, the Macau Youth Choir and the Swedish mezzo-soprano Charlotte Hellekant to interpret the extraordinary Symphony No. 3 by Gustav Mahler. The Festival concludes with five acts of Charles Gounod's opera 'Faust' in a co-production by the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the MIMF.

In order to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Anti-Japanese Resistance War, the 110th anniversary of the birth of Xian Xinghai and the 120th anniversary of the birth of Liu Tianhua, the Macau Chinese Orchestra presents 'Xian Xinghai and Liu Tianhua Commemorative Concert - 70th Anniversary of Victory in the Anti-Japanese Resistance War'. The acclaimed Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra brings a breath of fresh air to traditional music in the concert 'Jing‧Qi‧Shen'. This edition of the Festival includes the special concerts of 'Bravo Macau', which seeks to offer a stage to promising local musicians and encourage local music students by including performances by young musicians.

Icelandic musician Ólafur Arnalds, the all-male American choir Chanticleer, Patti Austin, Janis Siegel, Elisa Chan, the Danças Ocultas accordion quartet and acclaimed fado singer Pedro Mourinho from Portugal, the world famous BBC Philharmonic Orchestra from the United Kingdom, conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen, internationally renowned violinist Gidon Kremer and ensembles from Israel; Taiwan, China; Hong Kong; Italy; Switzerland and other places pack a programme that promises something for everyone.

In addition to numerous captivating musical performances MIMF offers an outreach programme divided into six categories, including the first session of the community activity 'Music Café' on 5th September and a series of master classes, workshops, and backstage tours.
