Receipts of Wholesale & Retail Trade Post Single Digit Increase

Retail sales of watches, clocks & jewellery goods fell more than 10 per cent

Information from the Statistics and Census Service indicate that Receipts of Wholesale & Retail Trade amounted to MOP114.48 billion in 2014, up 10.3 per cent year-on-year. Expenditure increased 13.1 per cent to MOP104.02 billion. Gross Surplus totalled MOP14.22 billion, down 1.4 per cent year-on-year. Gross Value Added - measuring sectoral contribution to the economy - rose 5.4 per cent to MOP21.92 billion, while Gross Fixed Capital Formation dropped 11.7 per cent to MOP1.23 billion.

There were 6,464 retail establishments, an increase of 413 year-on-year. Attributable to a slowdown in visitor spending, receipts recorded a smaller increase of 4.3 per cent year-on-year, at MOP68.75 billion, the first single-digit growth since 2004. Receipts from the retail sale of watches, clocks & jewellery goods (MOP18.56 billion) fell 11.5 per cent, while receipts from the sale of goods in department stores (MOP11.4 billion), leather articles (MOP8.35 billion), adults' clothing (MOP7.05 billion) and goods in supermarkets (MOP4.75 billion) rose 2.9 per cent, 12.1 per cent, 9.7 per cent and 11 per cent, respectively.

Expenditure increased 7 per cent year-on-year to MOP60.92 billion, of which the cost of purchased goods rose 2.8 per cent to MOP45.69 billion (75 per cent of total); moreover, the operating expenses and compensation of employees increased 22 per cent and 21.3 per cent, respectively. Change in inventories amounted to MOP2.72 billion. Gross Surplus totalled MOP10.55 billion, down 7.8 per cent year-on-year. Gross Value Added dropped 0.3 per cent to MOP15.37 billion.
