Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Alexis Tam hosted a cross-departmental work meeting to optimize the tourist signage system and tourism environment in November 2015. At the meeting, a number of government departments reported the progress of work, while Secretary Tam stated that the government is working hard to build the World Centre of Tourism and Leisure. Consequently, optimizing the tourism environment and tourist signage system was of particular importance. In future, the work group will put even more effort into continuing the related tasks and promoting Macao's image as a tourism city.

Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM) and the Cultural Affairs Bureau have already started work on the smart tourism signage initiative. MGTO added a two-dimensional QR code reading function to the 'Step Out, Experience Macao's Communities' mobile app last month. MGTO and IACM jointly set up the two-dimensional code identification on the classically designed direction signs around the city, along the eight 'Step Out, Experience Macau's Communities' walking tour routes. The two departments also co-operated with Land, Public Works and Transport Bureau research using colour elements to enhance the visual identity of eight walking routes on the 'Step Out, Experience Macao's Communities' programme.

In addition, the Cultural Affairs Bureau completed the setting up of the two-dimensional QR code on signposts in 32 streets and squares pointing to the 'Historic Centre of Macao', and the installation of 'WiFi GO' free Internet access at a number of heritage attractions. Later, the Bureau will explore the feasibility of establishing interactive tour signs (E-mupi) and explore using the presentation of surrounding tourist attractions at bus stops.
