To soothe the increasing transportation demand in the Border Gate area, the Transport Bureau is now conducting a multi-stage construction project of the Border Gate east tour bus drop-off zone. The construction project seeks to expand the entire tour bus drop-off zone by increasing the number of tour bus slots from more than 10 to 60 berths. Plans include migrating the tour bus drop-off zones from the underground bus terminal to road level, reducing tour bus and public bus conflicts.

The existing two-lane section of road leading to the Border Gate plaza from the main building of the border (vehicle entry Macao from Mainland China) will be replaced by a pedestrian and tour bus drop-off zone. Vehicles from the main building of the border to Border Gate plaza will benefit from a new seven metre-wide road at the side near a wall in the lower side of the tunnel so that the current area can serve as underground parking facilities.

At the same time, the space between the lane and flowerbeds will be reworked to expand the drop-off area; meanwhile, the awning cover on the sidewalk construction seeks to improve surrounding conditions. The Transport Bureau plans to build a U-turn lane at Avenida Norte do HipĆ³dromo and add traffic lights at the point of U-turn in order to improve traffic flow to and from the drop-off area.

Currently, some 22 bus routes make 2,700 daily trips, while 300 heavy vehicles use the facilities every day, too.
