St. Augustine’s Church Closed for Comprehensive Inspection

The St. Augustine’s Church repair project has been expanded

St. Augustine's Church, included in UNESCO-listed The Historic Centre of Macao, will be temporarily closed for a thorough inspection and conservation works following a partial collapse of the building's wooden ceiling and destruction of several roof tiles due to recent stormy weather. The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) immediately activated an emergency response plan, involving fully checking the church and repairs according to the original building plans.

Starting from 2008, IC has announced a detection system for Macao's cultural heritage revolving around regularly diagnosing and monitoring the city's cultural heritage. In the future, IC will communicate closely with heritage owners to increase the sense of protection towards heritage, and propose a higher degree of protection related to such heritage. Sensitive to the protection of the city's cultural heritage, the government will put more resources into monitoring the buildings that are part of it, and will also allocate more resources to protect it.

According to Macao legislation, cultural heritage in Macao is one of the most precious and important resources shared by its residents thus no matter users or owners of heritage all should share the same obligation to protect it. Consequently, IC will thoroughly review and provide better protection for the territory's heritage, promoting, in addition, the importance of protection to local residents via various channels.
