Visitor Expenditure Down 13.6 Per Cent in Q1

Visitors spent mainly on shopping whilst visiting Macao

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicates that total spending (excluding gaming expenses) of visitors in the first quarter of 2016 dropped by 13.6 per cent. Analysed by consumption structure, visitors spent mainly on shopping, accommodation and food & beverage. In addition, in the first quarter of 2016, visitors' satisfaction towards various services increased compared with the fourth quarter of 2015.

The data from DSEC indicates that the total spending of visitors in the first quarter of 2016 amounted to MOP11.54 billion, down 13.6 per cent from MOP13.36 billion in the same quarter of 2015 and 11.6 per cent from MOP13.05 billion in the fourth quarter of 2015. The total spending of overnight visitors (MOP8.86 billion) and same-day visitors (MOP2.68 billion) decreased by 14.8 per cent and 9.6 per cent, respectively, year-on-year.

In the first quarter of 2016, the per capita spending of visitors was MOP1,547, down 14.1 per cent year-on-year. Visitors coming to Macao for MICE events had the highest per capita spending, at MOP3,132, up 9.9 per cent year-on-year; meanwhile, the spending of those who primarily visited for vacation (MOP2,177) and shopping (MOP2,074) dropped 19.1 per cent and 10.4 per cent, respectively, year-on-year.

The per capita spending of overnight visitors decreased by 21.8 per cent year-on-year to MOP2,525, while that of same-day visitors dropped by 3.9 per cent to MOP679. Analysed by country and place, the per capita spending of overnight visitors from Mainland China (MOP2,897), Malaysia (MOP2,507), Singapore (MOP2,491) and Taiwan region (MOP2,973) decreased, while the spending of those from Japan (MOP2,627) and Hong Kong (MOP1,550) increased. Moreover, the per capita spending of same-day visitors from Mainland China (MOP813) decreased by 5.5 per cent, while the spending of those from Singapore (MOP556) increased 12.1 per cent.

Analysed by consumption structure, visitors spent mainly on shopping (43.7 per cent), accommodation (27.8 per cent) and food & beverage (20.4 per cent). Per capita shopping spending decreased by 22.3 per cent year-on-year to MOP677, of which the spending on local food products (MOP223) dropped by 8.7 per cent. Visitors from Mainland China spent an average of MOP923 (-23.0 per cent) on shopping, with Individual Visit Scheme visitors spending MOP1,269 (-11.6 per cent).

In the first quarter of 2016, visitors' satisfaction towards various services increased compared with the fourth quarter of 2015. Some 89.9 per cent of visitor-users were satisfied with the services and facilities of hotels, up 2 percentage points quarter-to-quarter, while those who expressed satisfaction with the services of travel agencies surged 89.8 per cent. Moreover, those who complimented the services of public facilities and public transport both accounted for 71.3 per cent, increasing, respectively, quarter-to-quarter. Visitors who commented that visitor attractions were adequate dropped by 1.3 percentage points to 41.1 per cent, while those considered them inadequate rose to 15.9 per cent.
