Kai Kai and Xin Xin, two giant pandas gifted to Macao by the central government, recently became proud parents on 26th June. Xin Xin gave birth to male twins, with the elder cub weighing 135 grams and the younger 53.8 grams at birth. The cubs were much lighter than average compared to other giant panda cubs. After veterinary inspection, Xin Xin and the first cub have been declared to be in good condition, while the underweight second cub was placed under 24-hour intensive care.

The newborn cubs were pink with a long tail, and looked like mice. Very small, they weigh only about one thousandth of their mother, thus they require intensive care. The newborn cubs are only sparse covered with a pubescent white coat, and do not yet have the characteristic feature of the giant panda's black and white coat. This only started appearing one month after birth, and now the cubs already look like pandas.

On 26th July the twins completed one month, receiving a special visit from government officials and a group of over thirty children to celebrate their birthday at their house in the Macao Giant Panda Pavilion, in Seac Pai Van, Coloane. The cubs, with infant names Tai Pou and Siu Pou, are in good health, now weigh 1010.5 and 735.6 grams, and look like real pandas.

As Xin Xin and her cubs still need to rest, the mother and twin cubs are only expected to meet the public after six months.
