Visitation and Hotel Occupancy Up, Tourism Price Index and Visitor Expenditure Down

Visitation marginally increased 0.9 per cent in the first seven months of this year

According to the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) observations of the first seven months of this year, visitor arrivals totalled 17,550,000, up marginally by 0.9 per cent year-on-year, with overnight visitors posting an 8.9 per cent increase. During the period, the occupancy rate of the hotels (three star hotel to five star hotel) accommodated 81.9 per cent, down marginally by 0.5 per cent year-on-year, while the Tourist Price Index (TPI) for the second quarter of 2016 dipped 7 per cent year-on-year to 125.19. And total spending (excluding gaming expenses) of visitors in the second quarter of 2016 amounted to MOP11.70 billion, down by 4.5 per cent year-on-year.

In the first seven months of this year, overnight visitor numbers increased by 8.9 per cent to 8,610,000, while same-day visitors decreased 5.8 per cent to 8,940,000. The average length of stay of visitors - at 1.2 days - increased 0.2 per cent year-on-year; the average stay of overnight visitors increased 0.2 days year-on-year to 2.2 days, while same-day visitors was 0.2 days. In addition, the number of visitors from Mainland China, the Republic of Korea and Taiwan region increased 0.3 per cent, 10.3 per cent and 11.5 per cent respectively, while the number of visitors from Hong Kong decreased 1.7 per cent. Moreover, the number of long-haul visitors from USA, Austraila, Canada and Britian increased stably.

And for Hotels, in the first seven months, the occupancy rate is 81.9 per cent, and the average price per rooms is MOP1,311.6, decreased 14.3 per cent year-on-year.

In addition, the Tourist Price Index (TPI) for the second quarter of 2016 registered a drop, credited to lower prices for hotel accommodation and flights. The price index of Accommodation fell 29.27 per cent, with the year-on-year decline accelerating from the fourth quarter of 2014, the price index of Transport and Communications dropped by 11.32 per cent year-on-year, while the price index of Restaurant Services and Miscellaneous Goods rose by 1.98 per cent and 1.84 per cent, respectively.

In addition, Visitor Expenditure Survey for the second Quarter 2016 shows total spending of overnight visitors is MOP9.29 billion and same-day visitors is MOP2.40 billion, decreased by 3 per cent and 10 per cent respectively year-on-year. The average spending of Tourists is MOP1,601, decreased by 4 per cent year-on-year, but increased 3.4 per cent quarter-to-quarter. Visitors spent mainly on shopping (43.4 per cent), accommodation (26.8 per cent) and food & beverage (20.9 per cent). And the Survey also shows that 90.8 per cent of the visitor-users were satisfied with the services of travel agencies, increased 1 per cent quarter-to-quarter; those who expressed satisfaction with the services and facilities of hotels rose to 90.1 per cent. On the contrary, only 39.5 per cent of the visitors commented that points of tourist attractions were adequate, down by 1.6 per cent quarter-to-quarter; those who complimented about environmental hygiene and public facilities accounted for 78.4 per cent and 67 per cent, down by 4.8 and 4.3 per cent respectively. Meanwhile, a relatively high percentage of visitors considered that public transport services should be improved, at 9.3 per cent, down by 1.4 per cent quarter-to-quarter.
