Ten Per Cent Increase in Visitors to Macao during Spring Festival Golden Week

Hotel establishments recorded an average occupancy rate of 94.5 per cent during Spring Festival Golden Week this year

The territory recorded over 930,000 visitor arrivals (excluding non-resident employees and students) during the Golden Week of the Spring Festival, an increase of 9.9 per cent over the corresponding period of last year.

Overwhelming majority of visitors from Greater China

During the Spring Festival, visitors from Greater China increased by 10.8 per cent year-on-year to a record 880,000, which accounted for 94.4 per cent of total visitor arrivals. Of these, 660,000 visitors came from Mainland China, accounting for 70.9 per cent of total visitor arrivals, a 13.8 per cent increase - the most among all the markets of Greater China. The number of Hong Kong visitors reached nearly 200,000 - up 5 per cent - whilst Taiwanese visitor arrivals decreased 15.9 per cent to a record 20,000. By contrast, international visitor arrivals decreased by 3 per cent year-on-year to 50,000.

Average room rate decreased while occupancy rate rose

As at the beginning of February, the supply of all hotels and guesthouses had reached 37,634 rooms in Macao. Industry figures reveal that hotel establishments (hotels and guesthouses) in Macao registered an average occupancy rate of 94.5 per cent during Golden Week, a slight year-on-year increase of 0.4 percentage points. Meanwhile, 5-star hotels recorded an average occupancy rate of 95.5 per cent, down 0.7 percentage points; 4-star hotels posted 92.8 per cent, up 0.2 percentage points; 3-star hotels were 96.2 per cent, up 4.8 percentage points; 2-star hotels posted 83 per cent, up 4.3 percentage points; while guesthouses registered 75.9 per cent, slightly up by 0.3 percentage points.

The average room rate of hotel establishments (hotels and guesthouses) in Macao dropped by 3.1 per cent to around MOP1,800 during Golden Week. For 5-star hotels, the average room rate decreased by 3.6 per cent to around MOP2,080; 4-star hotels increased rates by 2.4 per cent to around MOP1,520; 3-star hotels were up 0.4 per cent to around MOP1,460 and 2-star hotels increased rates 14.4 per cent to around MOP1,160. Guesthouses increased rates just 0.1 per cent to around MOP770.

Multiple inspections at various ports of entry and tourist sites

MGTO dispatched personnel to ten tourist spots to provide tourism information and guidance for visitors while assisting in crowd management during the Spring Festival Holiday. MGTO also conducted 53 inspections at various ports of entry and tourist sites in Macao, and sealed two apartments allegedly operated as illegal accommodation. During the Spring Festival Holiday MGTO received 27 visitor complaints regarding public transportation (taxis and buses), shopping, tour guides, hotel, dining, and service quality. MGTO followed up on all cases or transferred them to the relevant entities for settlement.
