Average Tourist Price Index Decreased 5.44 Per Cent Last Year

The Tourist Price Index of accommodation alone decreased 21 per cent in 2016

According to the Macao SAR Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) the average Tourist Price Index (TPI) for 2016 continued its downward trend from 2015, down 5.44 per cent to 130.86, with significant decrease in the price index of Accommodation at 21.20 per cent and Transport & Communications at 9.82 per cent, respectively. However, the price index of Restaurant Services, Miscellaneous Goods, and Food, Alcoholic Beverages & Tobacco increased by 2.27 per cent, 2.20 per cent and 1.91 per cent, respectively, year-on-year.

TPI for the fourth quarter of 2016 decreased by 4.48 per cent year-on-year to 134.96, attributable to lower charges for hotel accommodation and reduced airfares that pushed down the price index of Accommodation and Transport & Communications by 15.97 per cent and 16.23 per cent, respectively, year-on-year. Meanwhile, the price index of Restaurant Services and Miscellaneous Goods rose by 3.48 per cent and 3.10 per cent, respectively.

TPI reflects the price change of goods and services purchased by visitors. Sections of TPI goods and services are selected according to the consumption pattern of visitors; namely Food, Alcoholic Beverages & Tobacco; Clothing & Footwear; Accommodation; Restaurant Services; Transport & Communications; Medicine & Personal Goods; Entertainment & Cultural Activities; and Miscellaneous Goods.
