With the ever increasing exchanges between Macao and Taiwan region, and about one million visitations recorded from Taiwan region to Macao annually, the Taiwan region is the third biggest tourist source for Macao. Consequently, the Macao SAR Public Security Police Force (PSP) announced that Taiwan region residents can enter Macao on a Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents (Taiwan Compatriot Permit) from 10th April, 2017.

PSP will continue the original entry permit requirements, and provide visa-free access with entry permission to Taiwan Compatriot Permit holder. PSP will not set limits for Taiwan Compatriot Permit holders to enter the Mainland and will approve a stay of up to 30 days in Macao. The new regulation will not affect any Taiwan region resident entering Macao with original travel documents but advises that Immigration control will combine the limit of stay provided by different documents if the holder uses different travel documents to enter and exit Macao.

Taiwan region residents who hold a Taiwan Compatriot Permit can only enter Macao for tourist purposes, and cannot apply for 'Special Authorization to Stay' for education, business or any other purpose during his or her stay. The holder cannot apply for residency in Macao during his or her stay, either. The holder can apply for an extension of 'Authorization to Stay' for maximum 90 days after the holder enters Macao.
