MICE Participants Increased Almost 50 pct Last Year; 17 Hotels Under Construction

The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) reveals that for the whole year of 2016 a total of 1,276 MICE events were held, comprising 1,195 meetings and conferences, 55 exhibitions and 26 incentive events. The total number of participants and attendees was 1.72 million.

Meanwhile, the number of meetings and conferences increased by 32 year-on-year, with the total number of participants increasing 49.2 per cent to 176,000. The overall average duration of the meetings and conferences was 1.5 days, down 0.1 days year-on-year. On the other hand, the number of exhibitions decreased by 23 year-on-year, bringing the number of attendees (1.5 million) and total floor area occupied (309,000 m2) down by 37.3 per cent and 21.8 per cent, respectively. Moreover, the number of incentive events totalled 26, attracting 45,000 participants.

According to the organisers of 54 exhibitions for the whole year of 2016, there were 4,787 exhibitors in the year, with 25.8 per cent coming from Mainland China and 36.7 per cent from Macao. Professional visitors totalled 99,000, coming primarily from Mainland China (21.0 per cent of total) and Macao (54.6 per cent of total).

According to the MSAR Land, Public Works and Transport Bureau's recently released data on Macao hotels under construction in the last quarter of last year, some 17 hotels are under construction, providing 6,396 guest rooms, with 32 others in the construction project phase providing a further 7,777 guestrooms.
