The first meeting of the Committee for the Development of the 'Belt and Road' chaired by Chui Sai On, Chief Executive of the Macao SAR and President of the Commission, was convened on 2nd May. Chief Executive Chui Sai On pointed out that the 'Belt and Road' initiative has won broad recognition from the international community, and that the MSAR Government has already planned its respective strategies. In compliance with the instructions of the Central Government, the MSAR Government is willingly participating in this initiative.

With the co-ordination and impetus of the Commission, Macao's participation in the construction of the 'Belt and Road' initiative will be actively promoted to help facilitate the country's development plan.

At the meeting, the Chief Executive noted three things regarding the proper development of the Commission's work over the course of this year. First, reinforcing awareness of the work of building the 'Belt and Road' initiative: members of the Commission must be involved in promoting the correct knowledge for broad consensus among the various services, entities and sectors of society.

Second, attention must be paid to the co-ordination of work on the construction of the 'Belt and Road' initiative. It is necessary to conduct a number of works, including the systematic implementation of the Five-Year Development Plan of the Macao SAR, the construction of the 'One Centre, One Platform' and co-operation on the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Big Bay Area in conjunction with the 'Belt and Road' initiative.

Third, the support system for the construction of the 'Belt and Road' initiative must be improved. It is necessary to ensure a good relationship between the Central Government, Macao, and the various public services, and also between the government and civil associations, thus providing a better environment for discussion, joint construction and the sharing of the fruits of development. It is also important, he stressed, to enhance citizens' sense of accomplishment through participation in the country's development process.

The Head of the Office of the Chief Executive, O Lam, concluded the various activities conducted by the MSAR Government, including the preparation of general planning, the establishment of working mechanisms and the promotion of the 'Belt and Road' initiative apropos different government departments. In addition, she presented the work that needed organisation and supervision for implementation, co-ordinated and encouraged by the Commission this year.
