More Spectators Flock to Suncity Group 64th Macau Grand Prix

No.18 driver Daniel Ticktum emerged as champion of the 2017 Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix

During the Suncity Group 64th Macau Grand Prix, running from 16th to 19th November, over 410,000 visitors travelled to Macao, a 4.8 per cent increase compared to last year. Macao SAR Government Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture and Chairman of Macau Grand Prix Committee Alexis Tam concluded that the races together with other related activities had enriched the atmosphere of the race.

This year's race included six races; namely, the Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix; Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix; Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) GT World Cup; FIA World Touring Car Championship; Macau Touring Car Cup; and Chinese Racing Cup.

The Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix, once again headlining the FIA F3 Intercontinental Cup, was battled out on 19th November, with one of the most sensational finishes ever witnessed for this race on the Guia Circuit.

Race leaders Sérgio Sette Câmara of Brazil and Ferdinand Habsburg of Austria - dicing neck and neck - crashed on the final bend to let Daniel Ticktum from Motopark with VEB racing team take the chequered flag first.

In a sad turn of events, 31-year old British rider Dan Hegarty crashed in the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix at Curva dos Pescadores, and passed away en route to hospital. Alexis Tam expressed his regret and grief at this tragedy, spotlighting the dangerous challenges of motor sport and promising that the organizing committee would constantly improve different aspects of the track to ensure the safety of all racers.

Committee co-ordinator Pun Weng Kun and Sporting Subcommittee co-ordinator Chong Coc Veng emphasized that safety is always the priority of the races and the race track, adding that the committee would review this year's races and refine appropriate details in the belief that next year's event would be more splendid than this year's.
