Around 600 guests, including top chefs and restaurateurs from Macao and across Asia, attended the ceremony to witness the announcement of the annual ranking of the 50 most influential restaurants in Asia and present several special awards. Organized with the support of Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), Macao hosted the world famous gourmet award for the first time as one of the highlight events of '2018 Macao Year of Gastronomy', following Macao's recent designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.

'Asia's 50 Best Restaurants 2019' will feature in the city next year as it continues to promote its splendid gourmet experiences with other outstanding features as a City of Gastronomy to top chefs and restaurateurs.

MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes highlighted that as a Creative City of Gastronomy, Macao is committed to promoting creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable development, seeking exchange, innovation, cross-field collaborations, cheering traditions and training the next generation of culinary talent.

She also noted that the 'Asia's 50 Best Restaurants' list and awards ceremony had spotlighted Macao's position in the region's gastronomy community, and that with chefs and restaurateurs from across Asia gathering together at the ceremony their achievements would be a shining example to everyone.

The number one 'Best Restaurant in Asia 2018' was, for the fourth consecutive year, Gaggan, an Indian cuisine restaurant in Bangkok, the brainchild of Chef Gaggan Anand, while Macao restaurant Jade Dragon was also included on the list. 'Asia's 50 Best Restaurants 2018' fully showcased the multicultural and multinational talent of the dining industry in the region.

In addition to unveiling the results of 'Asia's 50 Best Restaurants 2018', ten special awards were presented on this glamorous occasion, including the Chefs' Choice Award, Sustainable Restaurant Award, Asia's Best Pastry Chef, One to Watch Award, and Lifetime Achievement Award, among other accolades.

As well as participating in the ceremony star chefs shared their stories and discussed industry trends during the '50BestTalks', themed around the idea of 'Exploring Identity' in Asian cuisine, held on 26th March at Wynn Macau. 'Asia's 50 Best Restaurants' also went to the Institute for Tourism Studies on the same day to conduct a Q&A session between an acclaimed chef and students. That evening, visiting chefs and restaurateurs networked among themselves and with local luminaries at a Chefs' Feast at the Military Club, where they enjoyed a bite of local Macanese cuisine.

The acclaimed chefs also toured some of the most popular wet markets in the city on 27th March, guided by local chefs, to learn about the local food and ingredients, exploring not only Macao's culture as a city of gastronomy but the city's East-meets-West heritage, for a more in-depth experience of the territory.
