Visitor Spending Exceeds MOP60 Billion in 2017

According to the latest Macao SAR Government Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) the total spending of visitors reached MOP61.32 billion in 2017, an increase of 16.4 per cent from the MOP52.66 billion of 2016; the total spending of overnight visitors (MOP49.75 billion) and same-day visitors (MOP11.57 billion) went up by 18.2 per cent and 9.5 per cent, respectively. In addition, some 1381 MICE events were held in 2017, up 105 year-on-year, while the total number of participants and attendees increased by 10.4 per cent to 1.9 million.

Increase in per capita spending, decline in visitor satisfaction

For the whole of 2017, the per capita spending of visitors was MOP1880, up 10.5 per cent from MOP1701 in 2016; per capita spending of overnight visitors (MOP2883) and same-day visitors (MOP754) grew by 7.6 per cent and 8.7 per cent, respectively. Visitors from Mainland China spent an average of MOP2203 (up 11.6 per cent), with Individual Visit Scheme visitors spending MOP2486 (up 10 per cent). The per capita spending of visitors from Singapore (MOP1848), Malaysia (MOP1762) and Japan (MOP1744) increased whilst the spending of those from Australia (MOP1429), the United States (MOP1236) and the United Kingdom (MOP1195) posted a decline.

In 2017, the per capita shopping spending of visitors rose by 14.9 per cent year-on-year to MOP855, mainly attributable to local food products (MOP252) and cosmetics & perfume (MOP230). Meanwhile, per capita spending on accommodation and F&B was MOP485 and MOP392, respectively.

For the whole of 2017, visitor satisfaction towards most of the services and facilities posted a decline. The proportion of visitors who were satisfied with the services and facilities of hotels (85.9 per cent) dropped by 4.2 percentage points year-on-year, while the shares of those who expressed satisfaction with the services of travel agencies (70.7 per cent) and gaming facilities (73.9 per cent) recorded double-digit decreases of 14.6 percentage points and 10.3 percentage points, respectively. Meanwhile, the proportion of visitors who commented that the city's tourist attractions were adequate (53 per cent) went up by 8.2 percentage points.

Meetings & conferences up 90, exhibitions down four

In 2017, the number of meetings & conferences was 1285, posting an increase of 90 events over 2016, while the number of participants surged 39.3 per cent to 245000, with those attending meetings & conferences of 200 participants or more (191 thousand) rocketing 55.2 per cent. The average duration of the meetings & conferences was 1.6 days, up 0.1 days year-on-year; the number of exhibitions decreased by four year-on-year to 51, while the number of attendees rose by 7.2 per cent to 1.6 million.

In regard to exhibitions, 44 were organised by non-government organisations, of which those with 20 thousand or more attendees dipped by two year-on-year to 21, whereas the number of attendees grew by 5.4% per cent to 1.2 million. Meanwhile, the number of incentives increased by 19 year-on-year to 45, with the number of participants expanding by 5.4 per cent to 48 thousand.

In accordance with the information collected from the 51 exhibition organisers, their receipts totalled MOP184 million; 44 exhibitions were organised by non-government organisations; the receipts and expenditure of these exhibitions amounted to MOP177 million and MOP144 million, respectively. After deducting the expenditure and financial support of the government and other organisations (MOP71.85 million) from the receipts, these exhibitions recorded a deficit of MOP38.62 million, an improvement from the deficit of MOP48.05 million in 2016.
