Organized by Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) and coordinated by Macau Travel Agency Association, the 6th Macao International Travel (Industry) Expo ('MITE') was held in the Cotai Expo of The Venetian Macao from 27th to 29th April. The event presented five key highlights of Macao's unique strengths as a Sino-Portuguese platform and a major hub along the Maritime Silk Road, as well as leveraging the role of Macao within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area. In addition to showcasing its local cultural and creative industries, the event highlighted what the city has to offer as a Creative City of Gastronomy, manifesting the new interwoven dynamic of tourism, culture, creativity and gastronomy.

MITE features 550 booths, presents five key highlights

In this sixth edition, the exhibition was expanded to occupy an area of 11 thousand square metres accommodating 550 booths in all. Presented on the largest scale since the event's initial inauguration, it featured 420 travel or tourism-related enterprises and units from 50 countries and regions throughout Asia, Europe, the Americas, Africa and Oceania.

Of the exhibitor units, eleven originated from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area, while 14 came from countries and regions along the Maritime Silk Road. In addition, eight exhibitor units were Portuguese-speaking countries, while 23 were tourism departments of Mainland provinces or municipalities.

The three-day Expo drew a total of 40120 visitors, a rise of 11 per cent from last year, and 305 industry buyers from major visitor source markets. Over 50 journalists arrived to cover the event. The Expo also conducted a series of signing ceremonies that brought together enterprises from tourism and related sectors for 38 agreements signed, in addition to a total of 26 destination presentation seminars and seven trade networking sessions being held.

This year, MITE featured five key highlights, namely, China-Portugal Tourism Networking, 'Maritime Silk Road' Tourism & Culture Display, Bay Area: Tourism Development and Opportunities Seminar, Macao 'Tourism・Creative' Street, and 'Macao: City of Gastronomy' Feature Zone, with the objective of creating new opportunities for tourism and related sectors at both home and abroad, as well as to practice the 'bring in and go global' strategy and align tourism enterprises from Mainland China, Portuguese-speaking countries and other parts of the world searching for new partnerships.

Macao tourism mascot debuts at MITE
MGTO's Macao Pavilion in MITE, themed after 'Experience Macao Your Own Style', showcased the variety of Macao's tourism resources and products to industry professionals and visitors from around the world. A 'Guangdong・Hong Kong・Macao' themed zone was set up in the pavilion to promote tourism products and tour routes across the three destinations. In addition, MITE displayed the prize-winning works of the Design Contest for Macao Tourism Mascot.

Recently, MGTO had researched and developed with Singou Technology (Macau) Limited, the research and technology development team of the Macau University of Science and Technology, a project to develop smart tourism robots. One of the robots - named 'Singou Butler 1' - made its debut at MITE, greeting participants and visitors from around the world as an initiative to encourage technology application in travel fairs. The official launch of the smart tourism robots is expected in the second half of 2018, when they will primarily be employed for tourist enquiries, destination promotion, and other activities.
