The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) released its annual City Travel & Tourism Impact Report at the WTTC Asia Leaders Forum, held recently in Macao. The report analysed and ranked 72 cities around the world, quantifying the economic contribution of tourism activities and related economic impact based upon several major indicators; namely, GDP contribution, employment, visitor exports, government expenditure investment, and so forth. Macao ranked second regarding its tourism sector contribution to GDP growth and international visitor spending.

The report indicates that the tourism sector directly contributed US$2.6 trillion to the global economy, and US$8.3 trillion to the global economy when taking wider indirect and induced impacts into account - equal to 10.4 per cent of the world's GDP.

In 2017, Cairo was ranked number one by the report as its tourism sector contributed 34.4 per cent to GDP growth, while Macao ranked second with 14.2 per cent total contribution and Istanbul (13.1 per cent) ranked third. Both Hong Kong and Macao posted the highest international visitor spending, followed by Dubai, New York and Bangkok. Meanwhile Macao (94.3 per cent) was identified as the location with the highest visitor exports in 2017.
