The Script Road - Macau Literary Festival Salutes Poets Laureate

At the 8th Script Road - Macau Literary Festival, held from 15th to 24th March, poetry very much takes centre stage. On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the birth of American poets Walt Whitman and Herman Melville, and the 100th anniversary of the birth of Portuguese authors Sophia de Mello Breyner Andersen, Jorge de Sena, and Macanese poet Jose dos Santos Ferreira (Adé), who wrote his poems in the local creole, special Patuá tributes will be paid to them all in a series of discussion panels, performances, film screenings and exhibitions involving local and international guests.

The Macau Literary Festival also commemorates the 100th anniversary of the 1919 May Fourth New Literature Movement in China, paying respect to such Chinese member writers Hu Shi, Lu Xun, Zhu Ziqing, Bing Xing and Lin Huiyin.

During the 10-day programme the Festival will welcome prominent poets such as the Vice-president of the Chinese Writers Association, Jidi Majia, plus Bei Dao, Yan Ai-Lin, Chris Song, Yam Gon, Chen Dong Dong, Shu Yu, Huang Fan, Lu Weiping, Na Ye, Tan Wuchang and Hsiu He, most of whom arrive from Mainland China, the Taiwan region and Hong Kong.

José Luís Tavares from Cape Verde, Pedro Lamares from Portugal, Hirondina Joshua from Mozambique and Eduardo Pacheco from Angola represent the Portuguese-speaking countries, while The Other Sky, a local poetry association, is represented, too, by members Ieng Ut, Lou Kit Wa and Wong In In.

Macau-based theatre group Rolling Puppets will stage a puppet-theatre show entitled ‘Drug’, which is a renewed adaptation of Lu Xun’s novel of the same name published in 1919. The Festival has also invited Portuguese 2017 Eurovision Song Contest winner Salvador Sobral to perform in Macao for the first time. Other guests - including musicians, novelists and filmmakers - will also participate in the Festival.

Primarily based in the Macao Contemporary Art Centre - Navy Yard No.1 situated in Barra, other Festival venues include The Portuguese Bookstore, Tak Chun Macau Art Garden, Creative Macau, The Albergue, IPOR and Cinematheque．Passion.
