Organised by Macao Government Tourism Office, the mega celebration event for Chinese New Year - ‘Celebrations of the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region - Parade for Celebration of the Year of the Pig’ - was unveiled on the third and sixth day of Chinese New Year (7th and 10th February). The event - a confluence of float parade, mega show, fireworks display, float exhibition and a newly launched activity for spectators to vote for their favourite float - helped residents and visitors enjoy a blissful Chinese New Year.

On 7th February, a record 18 floats featured various auspicious dishes traditionally served at Chinese New Year feasts. The floats glided alongside 32 performing groups comprising 800 performers, conveying good luck and best wishes including ‘five blessings descend upon the home’, ‘the phoenix appears’, ‘gold and silver fill the home’, ‘wishing you prosperity’ and ‘fruitful harvest’ to residents and visitors for a fruitful, happy year ahead. The second float parade marched across the northern district on the sixth night of Chinese New Year (10th February) filling the neighbourhood with joyful celebrations.

The Parade enjoyed wide popularity among residents and visitors, with resounding cheers filling the air as each float and performing group passed by the spectator stands. Spectators scanned the QR codes on floats they favoured to cast their votes in the ‘Favourite Parade Float Vote’.

As is traditional, these splendid floats were showcased on the seafront beside Macao Science Center followed by a display in Tap Seac Square. The selfie booth set up in Tap Seac Square this year attracted legions of photogenic enthusiasts!

Since the inaugural edition in 2013, the Parade for Celebration of Chinese New Year has increasingly developed into one of Macao’s signature festive events. According to the effectiveness evaluation conducted by a research institution on the Parade last year, the level of awareness and overall satisfaction both reached an excellent level. With this heartening result, MGTO will continue to augment the effectiveness of the event in order to attract visitation from a wider diversity of source markets whilst enhancing residents’ participation.
