In ongoing support of the Macao SAR Government’s scheme to optimise accessibility to the urban environment of Macao, MGTO participated in a promotional activity organised by Macau Deaf Association on 4th July. ‘Empathy.Silent Journey’ served to render a deeper understanding of the rights and needs of the deaf and hearing-impaired, and the methods and skills of communication employed to engage with them in the interactive experience provided.

MGTO Acting Director Cheng Wai Tong, MGTO Deputy Director Ricky Hoi, MGTO Head of Training and Quality Management Department, Doris Leong, and other MGTO staffers participated in the activity, gaining a deeper appreciation of the rights and needs of people with auditory disability via an introduction by the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

By emulating ways of communication of people with auditory disability and related experience scenarios, as well as learning about sign language and pertinent communication skills, participants could readily empathise with the needs of the deaf and hearing-impaired, learning how various kinds of accessible facilities can assist their daily life. Attendees also learned how to communicate and interact with deaf and hearing-impaired people in simple ways.

As an international tourist city, Macao is striving to refine its tourist facilities and services to cater to the different needs of travellers from around the world. By organising pertinent training activities and experiences, the Office endeavours to enhance the service standard and quality of MGTO staff and tourism industry personnel, increasing confidence in attending to people with various needs.
