The 30th Macao International Fireworks Display Contest - to be staged on the 7th, 13th, 21st and 28th September, and 1st and 5th October, and themed ‘Duo Celebrations for Macao’ - features not only an extravaganza of fireworks displays but multiple outreach programmes plus online voting activity to ramp up residents’ and visitors’ interest and participation in the Contest.

In celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region - and the Contest’s 30th edition this year! - Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has invited an unprecedented twelve extraordinary world-class pyrotechnic teams to slug it out in the night skies over six contest nights, rather than the traditional five, embracing Mid-Autumn Festival, National Day and 1st October Golden Week. The twelve pyrotechnic teams (in order of performance) are Malaysia, the Philippines, Portugal, Korea, the United Kingdom, Romania, South Africa, Canada, France, China, Japan and Australia.

With MGTO launching the Songwriting Contest last year, the twelve pyrotechnic hopefuls will choreograph their 18-minute fireworks shows to the top-prize-winning song Light your Fire as one of their background music scores, while the top entry design of the last Trophy Design Contest will adorn the actual trophies to be awarded to the winners of the 30th Fireworks Display Contest.

MGTO has also organised a series of outreach programmes to foster residents’ and visitors’ participation in the Contest. A seminar on fireworks will be organised at Macao Contemporary Art Centre - Navy Yard No.2, where a representative of the pyrotechnic consultancy assigned this year will be invited to talk about the process of fireworks production, on-site installations and safety issues pertaining to the Contest, as well as other specialty information.

A weekend programme of DIY workshops for the 30th Macao International Fireworks Display Contest is scheduled at Anim’Arte NAM VAN on every fireworks evening from 7th September to 5th October, while the 4th Macau International Lantern Festival, to be held at Anim’Arte NAM VAN and on the Waterfront Promenade of One Central Macau and Wynn Macau (Avenida de Sagres), will run from 7th September to 15th October.

In addition to the traditional Photo Contest and Student Drawing Contest, video production and poster design contests will be launched this year, too, with submission of entries for the foregoing programmes accepted from 7th September to 31st October.

The fireworks displays will also be broadcast live on TDM - Macao TV Channel, while synchronised music streaming from TDM - Radio Macao’s Chinese Channel (FM100.7) will be available at 9:00pm and 9:40pm every scheduled evening so that spectators can fully enjoy the annual spectacle. Meanwhile, residents and visitors can vote for their favourite fireworks teams online and enter a lucky draw for the opportunity to win attractive prizes.

MGTO and the General Union of Neighbours Association of Macau will co-present the Fireworks Carnival next to Macau Tower from 5:00pm to 11:00pm on the six fireworks evenings. The top three entries in last year’s Songwriting Contest will be presented on stage during the Fireworks Carnival.
