MGTO Reach Out to Tourists in World Tourism Day Celebrations

With World Tourism Day - falling on 27th  September - fast approaching, Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has organised a series of events - including the presentation of souvenirs to lucky tourists plus popular Tray Race, World Tourism Day Dinner, and distribution of gifts to tourists at MGTO Tourist Information counters - throughout the day in recognition of an event held all around the world.

On the morning of World Tourism Day, MGTO officials will present souvenirs to lucky tourists, while Macao tourism mascot MAK MAK will greet visitors as they arrive, too.

In the afternoon, the traditional Tray Race - kicking off from the Ruins of St. Paul’s - pits competitors from the F&B industry of Macao against each other in a mad dash through the streets and lanes of part of the Historic Centre of Macao bearing a tray of beer in a race to reach the Senado Square finishing line. In the evening, hundreds of local travel trade partners and media representatives will attend a World Tourism Day Dinner hosted by MGTO.

Macao will join celebrations around the world to mark the World Tourism Day, this year held under the theme ‘Tourism and Jobs: A Better Future for All’, to highlight the tourism sector’s role as a job creator. New Dheli, India, will host the official celebrations.

The purpose of World Tourism Day - designated as 27th September by the World Tourism Organization since 1980 - is to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value. The event seeks to address global challenges outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and to highlight the contribution the tourism industry can make to reaching the Sustainable Development Goals.
