Macao to Attend 23rd UNWTO General Assembly in St. Petersburg

A delegation from the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region will attend the 23rd session of the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) to be held from 9th to 13th September in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture (SASC), Alexis Tam, will lead the Macao delegation, accompanied by Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes. Stella Leong and Charles Lam - Advisors to the Office of the SASC - plus the MGTO Head of Communication and External Relations Department, Kathy Iong, among others, will also attend.

Themed ‘Education and Employment in Tourism, realising SDG 4 and SDG 8’, the 23rd UNWTO General Assembly will focus on the challenges facing the future of work in tourism and on how the industry can contribute to the achievement of United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically those referring to quality education (SDG 4) and decent work and economic growth (SDG 8).

The programme will focus on a Ministerial Debate dedicated to the theme of this year’s General Assembly meeting. Also on the agenda is a High-level Forum on Medical and Health Tourism, a High-level Summit on Innovation and Sustainable Development Tourism, the UNWTO Awards Ceremony, and several plenary meetings, among others.

Some 1500 delegates from all over the world are expected in St. Petersburg for the 23rd UNWTO General Assembly, including representatives from member countries, as well as associate and affiliate members from the public and private sectors, non-government organisations and academia.

Held every two years, the UNWTO General Assembly is the most important international meeting attended by senior tourism officials and high-level representatives of the private sector from around the world.

Macao has been an Associate Member of UNWTO since 1981, actively participating over the years in events and projects initiated by the Organization, with the aim of strengthening international tourism co-operation, enhancing the city’s profile, and engaging with the world’s top international tourism organisation.
