Hotels getting back to work after temporary closures

Macao hotels and guesthouses had an average occupancy rate of about 15 percent in February, according to figures released by the Macao SAR Government Statistics and Census Service

Some of the hotels and guesthouses in Macao that were closed for part of February because of the impact of the novel coronavirus have reopened.

The number of establishments that temporarily closed peaked in mid-February at 29, together containing 3,899 rooms. By 13 May, 8 establishments with a total of 2,390 rooms were still closed (see the most recent list at https://eservice.macaotourism.gov.mo/entityClosed/hotel.php?lang=1).

At the end of last year, Macao had 123 hotels and guesthouses, with a combined inventory of about 38,300 available rooms. Macao hotels and guesthouses had an average occupancy rate of 90.8 percent in 2019. Their average occupancy rate stood at 15.0 percent in the month of February, driven down by the coronavirus outbreak. according to figures released by the Macao SAR Government Statistics and Census Service.

Some restaurants and other businesses in Macao that rely on the tourist trade also closed for part of February. Many have since reopened.

Macao recorded approximately 156,000 visitor arrivals in February, a decline of 95.6 percent in year-on-year terms, according to figures released by the Macao SAR Government Statistics and Census Service. In February the statistical daily average was circa 5,400 tourist arrivals per day. In contrast, the average was nearly 100,000 visitor arrivals a day last December, the month before the first coronavirus cases in the city.
