35 leading Macao restaurants win Wine Spectator awards

This year’s Wine Spectator Restaurant Awards have been announced and 35 restaurants in Macao have claimed the global honour that comes from making the list. The haul of awards reflects Macao’s international standing as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.

Each year, Wine Spectator magazine selects excellent wine lists in food and beverage outlets across the world. This year’s list includes almost 3,800 restaurants in around 80 countries and territories. Each award-winning establishment is assigned to one of three categories: Award of Excellence, Best of Award of Excellence or Grand Award.

A Wine Spectator Grand Award is the highest honour, and celebrates dedication and passion in building an exceptional wine list over many years. Three Macao restaurants successfully renewed their Grand Award status: Aux Beaux Arts in the MGM Macau resort, Casa Don Alfonso at the Grand Lisboa Hotel and Robuchon Au Dôme, also at the Grand Lisboa Hotel.

There are currently just 100 restaurants around the world that hold this prestigious title and only five are located in Asia. Wine lists at a Grand Award winner generally include 1,000 or more selections, extraordinary cuisine and flawless service.

In the Best of Award of Excellence are some 29 winners from Macao. Globally, the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence was won by 1,387 restaurants, each typically with an expansive wine list with 350 or more selections, carefully designed presentations, menu pairings and well-trained staff.

The third category is the Award of Excellence, which recognises thoughtfully curated wine lists offering quality and diversity, along with compatibility with the style and menu of the winning restaurant. There were three awards to restaurants in Macao this year.
