Macau Food Festival promotes city’s gastronomic culture

This year’s Macao Food Festival to exclusively focus on local eateries due to the pandemic

The Macau Food Festival returns in November to celebrate the gastronomic culture of the city with a selection of delicacies served by Macao restaurants. The COVID-19 pandemic has meant an exclusive focus on local eateries on the 2020 festival, marking its 20th anniversary this year.

The 20th Macau Food Festival takes place between 13 November and 29 November at Sai Van Square. From Mondays to Thursdays, the daily programme begins at 5 p.m. and ends at 11 p.m. From Fridays to Sundays, the festival begins at 3 p.m. and ends at midnight.

The event is organised by the United Association of Food and Beverage Merchants of Macao. It is supported by a number of departments of the Macao SAR Government, including the Macao Government Tourism Office, Macao Foundation, Municipal Affairs Bureau and Environmental Protection Bureau.

The 2020 Macau Food Festival aims to be a marketing platform for local restaurants, a showcase of their products and a promotional vehicle for the creativity of their chefs. A maximum of 110 food stalls has been permitted because of COVID-19 prevention measures, making the festival smaller than usual.

The organisers have taken other measures to prevent the spread of the virus. Staff of the restaurants taking part have been required to attend special training sessions so they can comply with strict rules about handling, preparing and storing food during the event. To help reduce physical contact, different forms of electronic payment will be accepted.

Other measures include requirements for customers and staff to wear protective masks except while eating, to have their temperature taken, and to follow crowd control instructions. People are required to disinfect their hands regularly. Tables and chairs will be arranged to comply with social distancing requirements.
