Ready for action: Macao Grand Prix Museum officially opens its doors

The Macao Grand Prix Museum is officially open. The Macao SAR Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng, accompanied by the Macao SAR Government Secretary for Economy and Finance, Lei Wai Nong, officiated the inaugural ceremony on 1 June. The Chief Executive and other guests also toured the venue after the ceremony.

At the inaugural ceremony, Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) Director, Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, said the revamped Museum offers a fun-filled, educational and interactive journey, promoting Macau Grand Prix’s motorsport culture.

After two months of trials and testing at the new facility, tickets for immediate entry will be available on-site beginning from 2 June. During the trial period, the Museum received close to 12,000 visitors, including 33 delegations from 140 entities/organisations from the tourism sector, media and government entities.

For residents and visitors looking to schedule their visits in advance, the Museum is optimising ticketing arrangements through the official website at mgpm.macaotourism.gov.mo.

Tickets for admission can be purchased online 30 days in advance and up to one day before a planned visit. From 2 June onwards, the Museum will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Museum is closed on Tuesdays.

Interactive racing

The Macao Grand Prix Museum is equipped with a range of interactive games. Any guest who purchases a “pit pass” (admission ticket) can access self-service kiosks to set up a profile, choose a racing team and then save their race records.

Among the attractions are the Batak Reaction Challenge, G-Force Challenge of Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix, and MotoVR Race Experience. With every pit pass, there’s the opportunity to experience each game once, and enjoy the thrill of motorsport.

Data from surveys conducted during the trial operation period revealed that visitors to the Museum found the exhibits and guided tours “most satisfactory.” The most popular interactive games were the G-Force Challenge, MotoVR Race Experience and Pit Garage, according to the data.

Tours in four languages

Complimentary public guided tours of the Museum are available in Cantonese, Mandarin, Portuguese and English. These insight-filled guided tours last for about 45 minutes. They are small-group tours, and so their numbers are limited to visitors signed up on a first-come, first-served basis.

The revamped Museum has a maximum capacity of 2,200 visitors per day. In line with measures against the COVID-19 pandemic, a daily quota of 1,100 visitors was set by MGTO, with up to 284 visitors allowed per time slot (i.e., two hours).

The Macao Grand Prix Museum rigorously follows the pandemic prevention guidelines issued by the Macao SAR Government Health Bureau. Visitors are required to wear face masks throughout their visit, have their temperature checked and present Macao health code of the day upon entry.

The Museum is now about six times its previous size, with a floor area of about 16,000 square metres spread across four floors.

The exhibits offer visitors a window into the Macau Grand Prix, boosting not only the “tourism + sports” synergy in destination branding, but also help communicate and preserve the motorsport culture that is part of this iconic event.

MGTO also plans to partner with e-commerce companies to further promote the Macao Grand Prix Museum via different platforms.
