MGTO requires industry operators to check “Macao Health Code” in public areas

The Macao SAR Government continues to update its measures against COVID-19 in accordance with the latest turn of the pandemic situation in neighbouring Guangdong province, in Mainland China.

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention of the Macao SAR Government Health Bureau has issued the “Prevention of Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia – Recommendation to Require Presentation of ‘Macao Health Code’ for Admission to Public Areas”.

In accordance with the recommendations, individuals must present a valid Macao Health Code upon admission to establishments under Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) supervision. Since early June, hotels and guest houses, restaurants, bars, karaoke lounges, night clubs, saunas, massage parlours and health clubs have been required to check Macao Health Codes presented by individuals upon admission.

Anyone with a red or yellow Macao Health Code will be denied admission to such establishments.

MGTO advises all hotels, guest houses, integrated resorts, catering and other establishments under its supervision to ensure correct pandemic prevention. The Office has delegated staff to inspect establishments to ensure compliance with the pertinent measures.

COVID-19 prevention guidelines and advices issued by the Macao SAR Government Health Bureau currently include requirements to wear masks, and conduct temperature checks, among other measures.

Rules in transportation and other public places

People with either a yellow or red status under the Macao Health Code system cannot use public transport, including buses, taxis, and the Light Rapid Transit (LRT) system.

All passengers taking public transport are required to wear a protective face mask all the time. If not, they will be denied access to the vehicle or be asked to disembark from it.

The Macao SAR Government Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre requires the public to show a Macao Health Code status at immigration halls and other related buildings, medical institutions, offices of Government departments and agencies, and shopping malls.

Premises such as supermarkets, small shops, and wet markets, should decide in the light of their own conditions whether or not to require persons entering the venue to present a Macao Health Code declaration.

Arrivals from Guangdong

Since 8 June, people intending to enter Macao from Guangdong province must hold a nucleic acid test certificate, issued within 48 hours, proving they are “negative” for COVID-19 infection.

If Macao ID holders returning from Guangdong fail to provide a valid nucleic acid test certificate, they would be required to undergo a test at a designated venue, and would not be allowed to leave the testing centre until a “negative” result had been issued.

Non-Macao ID holders arriving from Guangdong must provide a valid “negative” test certificate or face being denied entry to Macao. Arrivals must undergo a 14-day medical observation if they had visited some areas of Guangzhou and some cities in Guangdong – 14 days prior to arriving in Macao.

Epidemic-control measures applicable to people arriving via the airport remain unchanged.
