MGTO to announce Macao’s Travel KOLs on World Tourism Day

The annual Tray Race is a traditional highlight in Macao to mark the World Tourism Day

When World Tourism Day begins on 27 September, Macao will see a day of celebrations as well as the announcement of the winners of the “Incubation Plan for Macao’s KOL in Tourism” that will help promote the city’s travel industry.

The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) plans to stage the annual Tray Race for the staff of hotels and restaurants, which has become a traditional highlight of the celebration of the power of tourism.

The 27 September sees the race get underway in the Historic Centre of Macao, starting at the Ruins of St. Paul’s and ending in Senado Square.

Costumed runners representing hotels and restaurants compete by running through the World Heritage sites, balancing a bottle of Macau Beer on a tray. It’s the mission of contestants to deliver the drink safely, and as quickly as possible. There will be prizes and trophies awarded to the winners of the race in the male and female categories, and for the best costumes.

MGTO will also take the opportunity at this year’s World Tourism Day to announce the 10 winners for the “Incubation Plan for Macao’s KOL in Tourism”. The winners will also be awarded an honorary certificate of “Outstanding Content Creators on Tourism”.

Some 50 candidates were chosen from more than 300 enthusiastic Macao residents to attend a content creation training camp to learn how to become a key opinion leader (KOL).

The training camp was conducted in August. It was organised by the Office and coordinated by Macau Live Streaming Association. From basic knowledge to advanced skills, skilled instructors shared their insights into Douyin, how to gain fans, how to build short video production skills, and how to effectively promote high-quality content.

The “Incubation Plan for Macao’s KOL in Tourism” aims to encourage Macao residents and travel trade to leverage social networks to spotlight Macao as a wonderful destination with diverse travel experiences.

The World Tourism Organization called in 1980 for World Tourism Day to be observed annually on 27 September, to increase awareness of the importance of tourism around the world, and of the social, cultural, political and economic value of the industry.

The theme of this year’s World Tourism Day is “Tourism for inclusive growth”, to focus on tourism’s unique ability to ensure that nobody is left behind as the world begins to open up again amid the massive social and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
