“Macao Week in Sichuan•Chengdu” helps expand visitor source markets

The Macao SAR Government organised a roadshow “Macao Week in Sichuan•Chengdu”, at Jiaozi Plaza, Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone in Chengdu, Sichuan province, from 23 to 27 September. The event, officiated by Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region, Ho Iat Seng, aimed at enticing Mainland visitors to put Macao on their travel plans, helping to spur Macao’s tourism and economy.

The mega roadshow promotion was a showcase of Macao’s tourism, commerce and trade, culture, sports, entertainment – among other fields – to locals and visitors in Chengdu. It helped promote Macao’s “tourism +” cross-sector integration initiatives were also endorsed, including “tourism + MICE”, “tourism + culture and creativity”, “tourism + e-commerce”, and “tourism + sports”.

Eye-catching promotions

An extensive promotional campaign for “Macao Week in Sichuan•Chengdu” rolled out both on and offline. As part of the event in Chengdu, a 3D animation promotional campaign about Macao was projected on one of the city’s landmarks, the Twin Towers of Tianfu International Financial Centre, located at Jiaozi Plaza.

Buses with promotional messages were also arranged to drive through some of the most popular districts in Chengdu, including Martial Marquis Memorial Temple, Kuanzhai Alley, Chunxi Road and Taikoo Li, to attract residents to the roadshow. A variety of advertisements were also on display in several areas of Chengdu including at MTR stations, LED screens at commercial buildings and shopping malls.

The event prepared more than RMB110 million in special travel offers. One of the highlights was the “Macao Blind Box”, available for sale at booths at the roadshow, which randomly offered Macao travel products on air tickets, hotel accommodation, dining and other products.

As part of the promotional campaign, KOLs specialised in travel, lifestyle, culture, gastronomy and other fields conducted live streams or posted short videos, photos and articles about the event highlights on popular social media platforms in Mainland China.

The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) actively publicised information about the event via its official accounts on WeChat, Weibo, Xiaohongshu and Douyin, as well as through television and newspaper advertisements, travel Apps and so forth.

Stunning roadshow

Macao SAR Government entities joined hands with organisations and businesses to set up booths at Jiaozi Plaza.

Themes included an overview about Macao and tourism events, Macao’s World Heritage and Intangible Cultural Heritage, Macao Good Shop, MAK MAK Shop, Macao’s sport events, trade and commerce, and a showcase of Macao’s tourism industry presented by tourism enterprises and an airline.

As a new highlight, there were check-in points at the roadshow for visitors to take wedding and travel pictures. The organisers partnered online travel agencies to promote wedding and travel photography products in Macao, offering visitors a window into various innovative tourism elements the city has to offer.

The roadshow also presented several sessions of colourful artistic and cultural performances including a Lion Dance, Portuguese Folk Dance, innovative dance performances, as well as a modern dance show choreographed to the brand-new original song “Soar with MAK MAK” from Macao.

“Tourism + MICE” strengths

MGTO and the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) jointly organised the Macao Tourism and MICE Presentation Seminar on 23 September to present in Chengdu the strengths of Macao’s tourism and meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) industries.

Featuring a business matching and networking session, a total of about 140 people attended the seminar, including tourism and MICE industry delegates from Sichuan and Macao.

Industry partners in Sichuan were briefed on the latest developments in Macao’s tourism and MICE industries. MGTO introduced the latest development in tourism and endeavours to revive the city’s tourism market, as well as promoting Macao’s diverse tourism resources and products.

Macanese and Sichuan dishes

Jointly organised by MGTO, Wynn Macau and Hotel W Chengdu, a gastronomic promotion titled “A Delicious Inheritance of Sichuan, Cantonese and Macanese Gastronomy” is running from 23 September to 24 October. The promotion seeks to foster the sustainable development of Macao and Chengdu as UNESCO Creative Cities of Gastronomy, and celebrate their diverse culinary culture.

The promotion includes a Macanese Cuisine Weekend Brunch, with the menu designed by Executive Director of Wynn Food and Beverage Academy and Wynn Portuguese Master Chef, David Wong. He also held a Macanese Cuisine Master Chef Workshop on 26 September, to share Macanese recipes and the preserved artistry of Macanese cuisine with the audience.

On 25 and 26 September, the Chinese restaurant Yao Yen of Hotel W Chengdu presented the Guest Chef Dining Series – Sichuan and Cantonese Taste Buds. Executive Chef of Wing Lei Palace at Wynn Palace, Tam Kwok Fung, collaborated with the Executive Chef of Yao Yen, He Lihua, to design an exquisite menu of Cantonese and Sichuan dishes.
