MGTO completes study on patterns of Indian tourism

MGTO strives continuously to diversify Macao’s tourist source markets

The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has completed its “Study on Indian Visitors in Macao” as part of its efforts to gain a deeper understanding of the attributes and behaviour of tourists from that important market.

To carry out the study, MGTO conducted face-to-face surveys with Indian visitors and in-depth interviews with tourism industry operators.

The findings were revealed late last month and showed that 55 percent of the survey sample had stayed in Macao for three days and two nights.

In addition, 71 percent of those interviewed expressed an interest in returning to Macao and 96 percent of the survey sample said they would recommend Macao as a destination to other people.

Among other findings, the study on Indian tourist arrivals found that more than 80 percent of the interviewed Indian visitors had travelled to Macao and Hong Kong in a single trip, and that 85 percent of the interviewees had visited Macao for the first time.

Some 47.5 percent of the survey sample said they had visited Macao for sightseeing and another 37 percent for leisure/vacation.

MGTO strives continuously to diversify Macao’s tourist source markets and increase the length of stay of visitors. India is among the international tourism markets that hold great potential to help meet these twin objectives. From January to November last year, Macao recorded more than 119,000 arrivals from India, with 75 percent staying overnight.

The findings of the report will serve as a basis for MGTO to implement destination marketing strategies and initiatives for Macao to gain more publicity in India as a tourism destination.

MGTO regularly undertakes studies that focus on tourists from markets abroad. Among the most recent are studies on visitors from Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia. Looking ahead, MGTO will continue its research to meet the direction of tourism policies and destination marketing strategies laid out by the Macao Special Administrative Region Government.
