MGTO calls off this year’s Macao International Fireworks Display Contest

Scenes from last year's Macao International Fireworks Display Contest

After careful assessment and consideration, the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has cancelled the 31st Macao International Fireworks Display Contest, scheduled for September and October, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

MGTO organises the contest every year, inviting fireworks teams from around the world to compete in Macao. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and consequent restrictions on travel meant MGTO was unable to confirm the line-up for this year’s event. It was also expected that the transportation of fireworks and related equipment would be affected. This meant the circumstances were unfavourable for the preparations of the contest.

After careful thought, MGTO cancelled the contest and peripheral events, including the Student Drawing Contest, Photo Contest and Fireworks Carnival.

The Office intends to adjust its line-up of events planned for the second half of this year, including the postponement of the 8th Macao International Travel (Industry) Expo to 18 to 20 September. With the goal of stimulating the economy, the Office also intends to reschedule the Macao Light Festival, usually held in December, to between late September and October – if conditions permit.

MGTO thanks the tourism trade, the people of Macao and visitors to the city for their kind understanding and support. The Office will continue joining all members of society in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, while looking forward to unfolding a diversity of events and activities in the future.
