Almost 3.27 million visitors were welcomed to Macao in the first half of this year, a decrease of 83.9 percent compared to the same period last year. The average occupancy rate across all hotels and guesthouses in Macao was 27.2 percent in the January to June period.
Among all visitors in the first half of 2020, about 2.34 million came from Mainland China, 652,522 came from Hong Kong and 81,628 came from the Taiwan region. Each of these source markets saw decreases of more than 80 percent in year-on-year terms, according to data from the Macao SAR Government Statistics and Census Service.
For the month of June, there were 22,556 arrivals or over 90 percent decrease compared to the same stage last year.
In the tourism industry’s accommodation sector, the occupancy rate across all hotels and guesthouses in Macao fell to 11.8 percent in June from 89.4 percent a year earlier. The figures from the Statistics and Census Service indicate that June’s occupancy rate in five-star hotels fell to 5.8 percent from 90.5 percent at the same stage last year. Occupancy rates of four-star hotels fell to 19.9 percent from 89.7 percent, and that of three-star hotels fell to 21.1 percent from 90.6 percent.
The average rate charged for a room in a Macao hotel fell to MOP698.30 in May, 47.2 percent less than a year earlier, according to figures given by the Macau Hotel Association.
The May average room rate fell in five-star hotels by 12.4 percent to MOP1,385.30, in four-star hotels by 61.8 percent to MOP308.40, and in three-star hotels by 62.8 percent to MOP387.70.
The Tourist Price Index (TPI) for the second quarter fell by 4.97 percent in year-on-year terms to 121.70. The index is kept by the Statistics and Census Service and reflects price changes in a basket of goods and services typically purchased by visitors. The latest TPI reading was influenced mainly by falling hotel room rates and prices of clothes and shoes.
| Macau International Airport handles 940,000 passengers in first six months of 2020 The throughput of passengers at Macau International Airport shrank to 939,968 in the first half of this year from more than 4.72 million in the first six months of 2019, according to data from the city’s airport operator. Passenger data from the airport operator shows a sharp fall between January and February, and a second significant decrease between March and April. Macau International Airport Co. Ltd (CAM) says demand remains weak, with a number of countries and regions imposing entry restrictions on tourists. Statistics show the number of aircraft takeoffs and landings at the airport decreased to 10,969 in the first half from 37,764 at the same time last year. The CAM board approved reductions in landing and takeoff fees for commercial passenger flights until the end of July. At its July board meeting, CAM also said it had cut fees for “qualified operators occupying certain areas” of the airport. CAM says it remains focused on working with the industry to relieve the stress the COVID-19 pandemic has caused to airlines and so help keep them flying. |
