Melco Resorts and Entertainment Ltd has joined a United Nations drive to promote the elimination of unnecessary single-use plastics and excessive packaging by 2025, in order to help reduce pollution and waste. The integrated resort operator is among the first group of 21 signatories to the UN-led Global Tourism Plastics Initiative.

The initiative requires tourism organisations to make a set of concrete and actionable commitments around the use of plastics. The UN Environment Programme and World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) are collaborating with British charity the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to take the programme worldwide.

Partners in the movement commit to a series of measures that include:

  • eliminating problematic and unnecessary plastic packaging and items by 2025;
  • acting to move from single-use to a reuse model or reusable alternatives;
  • working with industry to create fully reusable, recyclable or compostable plastic packaging;
  • increasing the recycled content in plastics;
  • investing to boost rates of plastic recycling and composting; and
  • reporting annually on progress made towards the targets.

Melco Senior Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer Denise Chen said: “We understand it is essential to step up and take action to combat the issue of problematic plastics and the resultant pollution it causes, and are committed to continue to integrate this into our core business strategy as a key focus area across our daily operations.”

Melco published in June its 2019 sustainability report highlighting progress made towards the company’s sustainability goals. For further details, please visit: melco-resorts.com/sustainability/index.html.
