Work on expanded Studio City resort in Cotai emphasises sustainability

Melco Resorts & Entertainment Limited says the Studio City resort is undertaking an expansion project. The Phase 2 of the Cotai resort will add another 900 rooms and suites to the 1,600 already in place, and includes non-gaming attractions such a large indoor-outdoor water parks, a cineplex, fine-dining restaurants, and space for meetings and events.

The building design, development and management of the project focus on sustainability. The development site is near the Macau Cotai Ecological Zone, an artificial wetland that is used by migratory birds. The hotel towers of Studio City Phase 2 are placed apart to create a “sky-stream” that does not block their migration, says the resort’s promoter.

Melco Resorts engaged an ecologist to develop preservation measures for existing flora and to create gardens that were compatible with the site’s landscape and habitat. Other measures include minimising the impact of excavation works so the wetland and underground water sources are not disturbed.

Studio City Phase 2 follows Melco Resorts’ sustainable procurement plan, which ensures all contractors use timber and timber-based products that have been legally harvested, traded and sourced in accordance with the Forestry Stewardship Council certification. Wherever possible, paints, coatings, sealants and adhesives with low or no volatile organic compounds are used.
