Colourful facelift at Rua de Cinco de Outubro helps promote district

A cluster of buildings in Rua de Cinco de Outubro and the streets nearby have been given a facelift by local artists and the Macao SAR Government Economic and Technological Development Bureau, turning them into what is known as “rainbow houses”.

The two-storey “rainbow houses” buildings were painted to match the signage of the establishments to create “check in points” as part of the campaign to help distinctive shops with local characteristics explore new business opportunities.

Rua de Cinco de Outubro is located near Senado Square and the Inner Harbour. It is a well-known street, filled with local shops and restaurants that help create a nostalgic atmosphere.

The collaboration between the bureau and local artists to increase the appeal of the area is based around creating destinations where visitors will “check in” using location-based social networks. The facelift matches three, bright-coloured murals painted in the area last year. The lively murals feature different themes that highlight Macao’s unique blend of Chinese and Portuguese cultures. The destinations around Rua de Cinco de Outubro include Largo do Pagode do Bazar, Rua do Guimarães, and Rua do Infante. Each of the check-ins is rich in history and creativity, giving visitors the insights to check out more of a district.

This project is part of a programme to identify distinctive shops with local characteristics, and help them improve service quality and build their brand’s profile.
