Greater Bay Area tourism authorities meet to seek further cooperation

Macao Government Tourism office (MGTO) linked last month with tourism counterparts to convene the “81st Work Meeting of the Tourism Marketing Organization of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao” and the “Work Meeting of the Tourism Alliance of Zhongshan, Zhuhai and Macao”, in order to further cooperation in tourism, and lay plans for 2021.

The “81st Work Meeting of the Tourism Marketing Organization of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao” was held on 4 March in Guangzhou.

MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes and Deputy Director Cheng Wai Tong took part in the Meeting. Also in attendance were the Director General of the Department of Culture and Tourism of Guangdong Province, Wang Yiyang, and its Deputy Director General Zhang Yimin; and the Executive Director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Dane Cheng, and its Deputy Executive Director Becky Ip. Participants shared the measures carried out last year to revive the tourism industry in the three cities. The representatives of the three entities also discussed joint tourism-promotion projects in 2021, including travel fairs and multi-destination promotions, among others.

In addition, the tourism authorities of Zhongshan, Zhuhai and Macao convened the “Work Meeting of the Tourism Alliance of Zhongshan, Zhuhai and Macao” in Zhongshan, where the three sides discussed opportunities for further cooperation in culture, tourism and related fields, as well as ways to jointly expand sources of visitors. The discussion also included future directions for regional tourism cooperation, as well as joint promotional activities and projects to be rolled out in 2021.

The Zhongshan Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism Bureau has been the Meeting’s “Rotating Chairman” for two consecutive years, as the event did not convene in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. MGTO was designated the “Rotating Chairman” for 2021.

In such capacity, on behalf of MGTO, Deputy Director Cheng Wai Tong briefed participants about a plan to jointly organise destination marketing activities in 2021. The Zhongshan Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism Bureau also presented an overview of tourism cooperation between the three cities over the past two years.

During the Meeting, the three tourism entities agreed to work together to support Macao’s development as a world centre of tourism and leisure, and to take part in each other’s promotional activities; to encourage increased travel between the three destinations; leverage the three destinations’ major tourism resources to create themed travel itineraries and emphasise the appeal of each of the three destinations in promotional activities.

Other endeavours cover the joint promotion of study tours across the three destinations; arranging for industry delegates from Macao and Zhongshan to pay an inspection visit to Zhuhai’s maritime, island and shoreline tourism projects; and updating travel guides for the three cities.

Macao’s tourism, MICE trades promoted in three Greater Bay Area cities

Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) and the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) organised a series of seminars promoting the city’s tourism industry and the meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) sector. The seminars were held in March in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area cities of Guangzhou, Dongguan and Zhongshan.

Members of the travel and MICE trade from Macao took part in the promotional activities, aimed at introducing to their counterparts in the three cities, Macao’s tourism-market situation and the “tourism + MICE” initiative.

With the situation around the COVID-19 pandemic generally stable in Mainland China, the seminars also promoted Macao’s image as a healthy, safe and quality destination, meant to instil confidence and attract more visitors from the Mainland, in order to drive the recovery of Macao’s tourism and MICE industries.

During the seminars, the Office introduced the audience to the latest developments in Macao’s tourism industry, and the steps taken to revive the market. MGTO also briefed participants about the city’s diversified tourism resources and products.

Members of Macao’s travel trade also shared information about the itineraries of the “Macao Ready Go! Local Tours” scheme launched in 2020, as well as other creative travel experiences rolled out to support the industry following a decline in business caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition, IPIM presented the advantages of Macao’s MICE industry, and encouraged MICE-related companies to organise events in the city.

Business-matching sessions also take place in each city, aiming to create opportunities for representatives of Macao’s tourism industry to interact with industry insiders across the Greater Bay Area and boost cooperation.
