Macau International Airport (MIA) joined the Airport Carbon Accreditation Programme launched by Airports Council International in 2014. Under the Programme, MIA initiated a 5-year Carbon Management Plan (2014 to 2018) addressing the areas of energy efficiency, fuel efficiency, and waste management with the specific objective of reducing carbon emissions per aircraft movement by 20 per cent in 2018 from their 2012 level.

MIA has, in fact, reduced the carbon emissions of aircraft movements by a significant 28.7 per cent from 2012 levels thereby reaching, and exceeding, the stated objective. Thus, MIA will set up another Carbon Management Plan in order to continue the long term commitment of MIA to reduce the impact of aircraft upon the environment.

The positive result of MIA in reducing carbon emissions is attributed to the implementation of improvement projects in recent years, including the massive replacement of conventional lighting with LED units in various areas of passenger terminal and airfield; replacement of the fleet with environmentally-friendly vehicles; upgrading of the baggage handling system; installation of green walls; finding opportunities to reduce electricity consumption by performing thorough energy audits; recycling food waste, and so on.

Airport Passenger Count Continues to Grow

In the first half year of 2018, the passenger volume of Macau International Airport (MIA) reached 4 million, an increase of 20 per cent year-on-year. In July, passenger traffic continued to increase, reaching a new record high, exceeding the 740-thousand passenger movement mark for the first time in the airport's history. This is the new monthly record of the highest single month passenger traffic with average daily passenger traffic over 23 thousand, gaining 11 per cent compared with the year prior.

For the full year of 2018, MIA forecasts over 8 million passengers, 39 thousand tonnes of cargo, over 60 thousand flight movements and 3100 general aviation aircraft movements. Meanwhile, four new routes were launched to Moscow in Russia, Tuguegarao in the Philippines, Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia, and Phuket in Thailand, with three new airline companies using MIA in the first half year of 2018. As of July this year, some 29 airlines flying 49 routes flew out of Macau International Airport.
