Organised by Macao SAR Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) and co-organised by Macao Government Tourist Office, the result of the 11th edition of the Macao Green Hotel Awards - announced on 9th May - recognised 15 deserving hotels. One hotel won the Platinum Award, the highest accolade, and given out for the first time, while all award-winning hotels demonstrated a major improvement in recycling and other environmental protection measures.

In order to further enhance environmental protection measures throughout the hotel industry the 11th edition of the Macao Green Hotel Awards inaugurated the 'Platinum Award'.

All rewarded hotels were required to achieve the following high standards; namely, reduction of 10 per cent or more of waste from each occupied room; monitoring of dispersal rate and recycle rate of kitchen waste; enactment of waste and recycle measurement mechanism; installation of parking spaces and charging plugs for electric vehicles, and so forth. Eventually, The Venetian Macao ticked all the boxes with an excellent performance to win the first-ever Platinum Award.

The Four Seasons Hotel Macao, Grand Hyatt Macau and The Parisian Macao received Gold Awards; Crowne Plaza Macau and Hotel Beverly Plaza received Silver Awards; while Pousada Marina Infante Hotel and Harbourview Hotel received Bronze Awards. Meanwhile, Wynn Macau, The Landmark Macau, Pousada de Coloane, Grandview Hotel Macau and Inn Hotel Macau received Merit Awards. Economic guesthouse Love Lane 7 Inn received the Green Guesthouse Award and Hong Thai Hotel received the Basic Certificate.

Since the launch of the Macao Green Hotel Awards in 2007 the number of prize-winning hotels has increased to 51, while the number of rewarded hotel rooms exceeds 27000. Recycling performance and other environmental protection measures also demonstrated a major improvement, with the rate of recyclable waste increasing to about 1600 tons from 2016 to 2017. Hotels that participated in the kitchen waste recycling scheme increased to 61 per cent in 2017 from only 17 per cent in 2011.

DSPA will organise a celebratory ceremony for the new edition of award-winning hotels this month.
