• Hotel and guesthouse receipts totalled MOP32.59 billion in 2017, up 14.7 per cent year-on-year

Double Digit Growth in Accommodation Sectors, Travel Agency Revenues

The latest Macao SAR Government Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) figures reveal that the number of operating hotels and guesthouses increased by four year-on-year to 113 in 2017, including 79 hotels and 34 guesthouses, while receipts and gross surplus of the hotel sector recorded double digit growth in 2017 attributable to the increase in guestrooms and guests of hotels and guesthouses.

The figures also show that a total of 210 travel agencies were operating in 2017, an increase of one year-on-year. Attributable to the increase in outbound residents using the services of travel agencies, industry receipts grew 20.7 per cent year-on-year.

Hotels' and guesthouses' receipts totalled MOP32.59 billion in 2017, up 14.7 per cent year-on-year, while expenditure of the sector was MOP28.98 billion, up 8.8 per cent year-on-year, with Compensation of Employees (MOP13.02 billion), Operating Expenses (MOP12.77 billion) and Purchase of Goods & Commission Paid (MOP3.19 billion) rising 9.1 per cent, 8.5 per cent and 8.9 per cent. The Gross Value Added figure, measuring the sectoral contribution to the economy, rose by 17.3 per cent year-on-year to MOP16.59 billion.

Of the various items of receipts of travel agencies, those generated by Package Tours (MOP2.49 billion), Room Reservation Services (MOP2.06 billion) and Passenger Transport Ticketing (MOP1.66 billion) increased by some 20.5 per cent, 61.2 per cent and 0.9 per cent, respectively, year-on-year whilst those from Rental of Coaches with Driver (MOP942 million) dropped by 3.5 per cent. As regards expenditure, the Purchase of Goods & Services and Commission Paid increased by 26 per cent to MOP6.02 billion, and accounted for 79.1 per cent of total expenditure. Gross Value Added totalled MOP1.12 billion, up 12.9 per cent year-on-year.

Average occupancy rate reached new heights in August

Figures published by Macao SAR Government Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicate that the average occupancy rate of hotels and guesthouses in August registered a record high of 93.3 per cent since the survey results were first released, a growth of 6.5 percentage points year-on-year; meanwhile, 5-star and 4-star hotel rates reached 96.2 per cent and 94.6 per cent, respectively.
