In celebration of its 20th Anniversary the Macao Cultural Centre (CCM) is presenting two new shows, including one contemporary dance, aimed at a wide range of audiences.

On 20th and 21st April, the charm of the world’s best known marionette will light up the CCM stage with Pinocchio, a contemporary dance and physical theatre presentation for the whole family. Adapted by Award-winning Israeli choreographer Jasmin Vardimon, Carlo Collodi’s classic story is brought to life by the Jasmin Vardimon Company in a tale of visual delight; interpreted by a breathtaking cast of dancers, this family-friendly show welcomes 6-year-old and above children with their parents.

From 26th to 28th April, the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre will stage the touching and darkly humoured world of The Father, from the original Le Père, a play that has captivated the most celebrated of international stages. Penned by France’s hottest literary talent and awarded playwright Florian Zeller, this is the poignant story of an 80-year-old man afflicted by Alzheimer’s who gradually loses touch with reality, confronting audiences with the emotional hues and inner turmoil stemming from an increasingly common condition in modern society.

Staged by the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, the troupe invited former Artistic Director Fredric Mao to take up the lead role in The Father, supported by veteran actress Pang Hang Ying and Alice Lau. The Father was recognised by four awards and five nominations in the 27th Hong Kong Drama Awards.

Macao Museum presents 11 new exhibits

In order to strength the promotion of archaeology, Macao Museum has added 11 new exhibits to its exhibition zone on the 1st floor, explaining both in text and images the progress of archaeological work in Macao, excavations in different parts of the city in the past, and key archaeological findings. Exhibition-goers are invited to expand their knowledge of the cultural context and history of Macao through these valuable new exhibits.

Several archaeological excavations have been conducted in the older parts of Macao; namely, in Mount Fortress, the Church of Mater Dei, St. Paul’s College, Rua de D. Belchior Carneiro and so forth, with ceramic fragments, export porcelain, jade and stoneware unearthed in those locations.

Between 1973 and 2006 archaeologists have conducted digs in Hac Sá, from which they have retrieved the ruins of a jade workshop dating back 4000 years plus painted pottery dating back 6000 years. Such excavations demonstrate the importance of Macao as a centre of cultural exchange between East and West, and as an indivisible part of Chinese culture. In recent archaeological discoveries in 300 sites in the Pearl River Delta, the relics share similarities with those unearthed in Macao.

Macao Museum opens from 10:00am to 6:00pm (last admission 5:30pm), and is closed on Monday. Admission is free every Tuesday and 15th of every month for Macao ID holders. For more information, please visit: www.macaumuseum.gov.mo.
