Total Macao Visitor Spending Hit MOP70 Billion Last Year

According to the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), for the whole year of 2018 the total spending of visitors reached MOP69.69 billion, an increase of 13.6 per cent as compared to 2017 (MOP61.32 billion). Total spending of overnight visitors (MOP56.24 billion) and same-day visitors (MOP13.45 billion) recorded respective growth of 13 per cent and 16.2 per cent.

Spending per visitor for the whole year rose by 3.5 per cent from MOP1880 in 2017 to MOP1946. Per capita spending of overnight visitors grew by 5.5 per cent year-on-year to MOP3041, while that of same-day visitors rose 3.1 per cent to MOP777. In terms of main purpose of visit, per capita spending of visitors attending MICE events (MOP3506) topped the list, up by 1.4 per cent year-on-year, while the spending of those shopping (MOP2618) and vacationing (MOP2552) both increased 1.8 per cent.

Analysed by place of origin, the per capita spending of Mainland visitors led in 2018 at MOP2,242, up 1.8 per cent year-on-year, while the per capita spending of visitors from Japan (MOP1871), Singapore (MOP1853) and Taiwan region (MOP1613) registered year-on-year growth; spending by those from Malaysia (MOP1605) decreased. With regard to long-haul visitors, per capita spending of those from Australia (MOP1508) and the United States (MOP1318) increased, while the spending of those from the United Kingdom (MOP1193) posted a modest drop.

In 2018, the shopping spending of visitors (MOP916) rose by 7.2 per cent year-on-year, accounting for 47.1 per cent of per capita spending whilst spending on accommodation (MOP498) and food & beverage (MOP389) constituted 25.6 per cent and 20 per cent, respectively. Spending on cosmetics & perfume (MOP280) expanded by 21.9 per cent year-on-year, while that on local food products (MOP248) decreased by 1.5 per cent.

With respect to visitors’ comments, satisfaction towards the various services and facilities in Macao registered increases to different extents in 2018; the proportion of visitors who expressed satisfaction with the services of travel agencies (79.6 per cent) and public facilities (80.4 per cent) grew by 8.9 percentage points and 6.8 percentage points, respectively, year-on-year. However, 8.2 per cent of visitors indicated that improvement in public transport services was necessary.
