The world famous Forbes Travel Guide - recognised as the bible of top luxury travel - plays a crucial role for travel planners. In Forbes Travel Guide’s 2019 Star Award Winners announced at the end of February some 1693 properties were selected for honours, inluding 19 hotels, 23 restaurants and 14 spas in Macao. Of these, 12 hotels received Five-Star awards, the highest honour in the Star Rating pantheon. Macao has also been acclaimed as the location with the second largest number of Five-Star awards hotels, after London, and as the location with the greatest number of Five-Star restaurants and spas.

The 12 selected Five-Star hotels are Altira Macau; Banyan Tree Macau; Conrad Macao, Cotai Central; Encore Macau; Four Seasons Hotel Macao; Mandarin Oriental, Macau; MGM Macau; Nüwa Macau; The Ritz-Carlton, Macau; Star Tower at Studio City Macau; Wynn Macau and Wynn Palace.

In the 2019 Star Award Winners list, six new local restaurants captured the coveted Five-Star achievement for the first time, led by Wynn Palace with three Five-Star awards for Mizumi, Sichuan Moon by Andre Chiang and Wing Lei Palace. Eight new local spas also captured the Five-Star accolade, including Zensa Spa at Studio City.

For the 61st annual edition, Forbes Travel Guide inspectors visited the new destinations of Anguilla, Bahrain, Belize, Danang, Doha, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, Istanbul, Oman, Perth, the Swiss Alps, Tel Aviv and Uruguay, producing the biggest and most diverse group of honorees to date.

To identify the top luxury experiences, inspectors checked into the respective hotels for a minimum of two nights posing as ordinary guests. Once ensconced, inspectors tested 900 objectives, rating graciousness, thoughtfulness and personalised service: some 75 per cent of a hotel’s score is based upon its level of service, while 25 per cent is determined by the quality of its facilities.
